Start your day at Plum Island, an 11-mile long barrier island, home to miles of sandy beaches and the Parker River Wildlife Refuge. Bring your binoculars and you’ll join the thousands of birdwatchers who flock to the area. Or, rent a kayakexplore the tidal marshes or join a whalewatch, departing from the harbor. Prefer to keep your feet on land? Explore the city on bike via the Clipper City Rail Trail or stroll along the boardwalk, right in downtown. 

For many, it’s the picturesque downtown that makes Newburyport so memorable. With a rich history of preservation, historic homes and brick facades line the city streets. Museums like the Custom House Martime Museum and the Museum of Old Newbury detail the rich history of our area with a wide variety of lectures, exhibits add events. 

 

SHOPS & RESTAURANTS

Unique shops and top-rated restaurants abound including New England's only oyster, crudo and chop bar, Brine, New England classics with a twist, The Poynt and longtime local fixture, The Grog.  In a hurry? Grab a quick burger at Lexie's on State or a taco to go at Metzy's. If it's a Thursday, stop by Newburyport Brewing for live music and craft beers at the tap room. The cobble-lined, pedestrian-only Inn Street hosts a variety of street fairs including Savor Newburyport’s Grand Tasting with live music, art and food highlighting our local resources. Outdoor concerts and movie nights along the waterfront, antique car shows, and tall ship visits, book our calendars year-round.

 

THE ARTS SCENE

A cornerstone of our vibrant visual arts scene is the Newburyport Art Association. Founded in 1948, the NAA has over 500 members and a full calendar of exhibits and community outreach programs. The performing arts flourish at the Firehouse Center for the Arts, housed in a converted firehouse. With high-quality and diverse programming in an intimate venue, you'll find a wide range of performances to fuel your passion for the arts.

EVENTS AND FESTIVALS

For the book lover, be sure to check out the Newburyport Literary Festival, a celebration of literature, readers, writers attracts renown writers from around the country. The Newburyport Documentary Film Festival shares thoughtful film making with residents of Newburyport and beyond.

Other unique events include the Yankee Homecoming celebration with a week of programming including concerts, parades, bed races and more. Downtown businesses celebrate throughout the year with events such as Trick-or-Treating, Witches Night Out and Invitation Night. Don't miss Santa's arrival via boat at the annual   Santa Parade. And, of course, the Holiday House Tour hosted by the Anna Jaques Hospital Aid Association which showcases Greater Newburyport's most beautiful homes and community treasures.
